Highlights of 2019 IYLFS Competition Days

2019 International Youth Leadership Finance Summit (2019 IYLFS) organized by Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) Master of Finance (MF) Program rang down its curtain in Shanghai recently.

During the competition days of the 2019 IYLFS, 24 teams with top students from around the world gathered at SAIF and delivered interesting presentations and insightful discussions on AI and Capital Markets. The competition projects range from E-commerce/Consumption, Education, Big Data Application, Smart City/Smart Agriculture, and Healthcare/Pharmaceutical. Five teams from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Xi'an Jiao Tong University, Peking University, McGill University and London School of Economics and Political Science eventually won the Best Pitch in five categories, and the team from Xi'an Jiao Tong University won the first prize.

In addition to professors from SAIF: Prof. Zhan Jiang, Associate Professor of Finance, Faculty Director of MF Program, SAIF; Prof. David. X. Li, Professor of Finance, Faculty Co-Director of Master of Finance Program, Associate Director of CAFR, SAIF;Prof. Jie Hu, Professor of Practice, SAIF, formerly Chairman and CEO from Xunlei BigData Co., Ltd. and Xunlei Finance Co., Ltd., 2019 IYLFS also assembled a jury of industry leaders from well-known enterprises such as Panda Capital, Qiming Venture, Sequoia Capital China, Lantern Venture, Principal Financial Group, CCB Principal Asset Management and etc.





 

E-commerce/ Consumption

Under the E-commerce/Consumption Category, the team from Peking University discussed ways to reduce energy usage and costs, through applying AI to different aspects including procurement, cold chain, delivery and feedback of Miss Fresh. The team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University took the iKongJian decoration company as the prototype to further demonstrate how AI can improve scene experience. The team from Renmin University of China developed a better customized and more efficient travel planner based on the “AI+” promotion plan; the team from Nankai University showcased the key role played by AI in creating a VR interactive scene in home decoration system. Finally, the iKongJian Team from Shanghai Jiao Tong University won the Best Pitch of this category for proposing three economically effective “AI+” solutions to improve the current Internet Home Decoration mode.

Under the Category of “Education”, the first team from Tsinghua University, as Action Education, mainly created an AI-centered knowledge database to strengthen its competitiveness. The second team from Nanjing University, representing Wenba Technology-Master Learner, further improved the user learning experience through AI technology. The University of Science and Technology of China Team, as Tianyu Education, utilized neural network and algorithms to demonstrate a new personalized teaching model. The fourth team from Xi'an Jiao Tong University, as VIPKID, boasts profitability improvement by better matching teachers and students. Finally, the team from Xi’an Jiaotong University won the Best Pitch with their solid business analysis and industry insight.

Big Data Application

The Peking University team shared their project on BBD Service, which focused on creating a big data platform for small and micro companies. Surprisingly, Mr. Yuan Xianzhi, the Chief Risk Officer, came to the Summit to express his affirmation. The Tsinghua University team’s WeBank project proposed the use of robot consultants to improve the efficiency of online banking services. Wuhan University team's Pocket Wealth project attempted to provide personalized intelligent butler service through AI algorithm. Xiamen University team's Liangchao Technology project supported research through quantitative database. Students from the University of Toronto, Emory University and Baruch College shared their project on Dynamic Yield and tried to create a personalization engine. In the end, the Peking University team won the favor from the judges.

Smart City / Smart Agriculture

In the "Smart City" Category, students from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-Sen University, National Chengchi University and National Cheng Kung University shared their projects on four great companies: Onesight, Craftsman Network Technology, Future Home, and Haotingche. The AI applications covered architectural design, building management, smart home, and smart parking. In the “Smart Agriculture” section, students from McGill University and Cambridge University made a wonderful sharing of Cargill and Grosvenor Farm respectively, using AI technology to promote agricultural output and finally achieve green economy. The McGill University team stood out and won the Best Pitch Prize in this category.

Healthcare/Pharmaceutical

In the Healthcare/Pharmaceutical Category, students from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, London School of Economics and Political Science and University of Surrey, Sichuan University, and London School of Politics and Economics shared their unique insights on the AI applications in medical fields. They brought together projects of Jianpei Technology, HEALTH BioMed, BenevelentAI, Dr. Sport, and Babylon Health. In the end, London School of Politics and Economics won the Best Pitch Prize in this category.

After attentive listening, judges inquired more details about their business plans in the Q&A session, advising participants to put more emphasis on the necessity of AI adoption in their plans, to use more direct data in analyzing potential benefits, and to highlight unique advantages compared to horizontal competitors. Competing teams are advised to consider the specific needs of the project and how to put the projects into practice. The collision of opinions and in-depth insights from experts led participants and audience to ponder more over these topics.

All teams tried to impress the judges and gained virtual investment from them. Some teams not only won the Best Pitch but also got the chance to further interact with the industry companies and leaders.
