Indonesian Medical Delegation Explores Biomedical Partnerships with SAIF

2025-03-14

From February 27th to March 4th, 2025, a medical delegation from Indonesia—led by Dr. Mukti Arja Berlian, Director of Health Department at the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia—visited China to explore technological exchanges and cooperation in the biomedical field. The visit, facilitated by the Southeast Asia Center of the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF) at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), aimed to strengthen healthcare cooperation between China and Indonesia through academic and industrial collaboration. Dr. Zhang Yong, Associate Dean of SAIF, and Dr. Hu Jie, Professor of Practice and Executive Director of the Southeast Asia Center, attended the welcome ceremony.

Building Bridges with Academic-Industrial Collaboration

During the welcome ceremony, Dr. Hu highlighted SAIF's innovative approaches to integrating finance and the health industry, emphasizing the Center's pivotal role in facilitating resource exchange between Southeast Asian countries and China.

Zhifeng Wei—Deputy Secretary-General of China Biomedical Industry Innovation and Transformation Association (CBIITA), Chairman of the Youth Special Committee, and Deputy Director of the Grassroots Health Management Special Fund Office of the China Health Promotion Foundation—shared insights on China's implementation of the "Healthy China 2030 Strategy" and efforts to develop a hierarchical diagnosis and treatment system for grassroots healthcare. He advocated for enhanced health cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Dr. Berlian expressed Indonesia's interest in China's medical equipment, cell therapy, and other innovative technologies—signaling a strong desire for future collaboration. The delegation, comprising experts in ophthalmology, dermatology, and international affairs, reflected Indonesia's focus on specialized medical technologies and industrial management.

Exploring Cutting-Edge Biomedical Innovations

Guided by the SAIF Southeast Asia Center and partner institutions, the delegation visited the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (SCDC) and several leading Chinese biomedical enterprises, including: Shanghai Medical Instruments Co., Ltd. (under Shanghai Pharmaceuticals), Tong Tai Industrial Investment Group, Eder Medical Equipment, Anhui Bei Ke Bang Biotechnology, Luyi Cell Science and Biotech, and Ba Ge Shi (Shanghai) Environmental Technology. The delegation also participated in a Nanjing conference hosted by CBIITA, discussing emerging medical technologies and industry internationalization strategies.

Indonesia's emphasis on grassroots medical equipment, specialized technologies, and public health management aligns with Chinese enterprises' strategic expansion in Southeast Asia. The SAIF Southeast Asia Center serves as a bridge for economic and trade exchanges, promoting the internationalization of Chinese biomedical technology, supporting Indonesia's medical system modernization, and deepening regional industrial cooperation. Future initiatives will prioritize academic seminars, enterprise partnerships, and policy coordination to foster a robust China-ASEAN health ecosystem.

This visit establishes a solid foundation for future cooperation in technology transfer, talent development, and joint research. It represents a significant milestone in healthcare collaboration between both nations and highlights the global competitiveness of China's biomedical industry. Through shared technology and market opportunities, both sides aim to enhance regional medical standards and contribute to building a "Health Silk Road."
