    Operations research, Including Queueing, Scheduling, Financial Engineering, Inventory Control, and Supply Chain Management.

Xiuli Chao is a Special-Term Professor of Management Science at Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF), and the Ralph L. Disney Chair Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is currently the principal scientist of Supply Chain Management at Amazon.  

Professor Chao has been recognized for his outstanding contribution to operations research, including stochastic optimization, queueing, game theory and applications, financial engineering, inventory control, and supply chain management. Professor Chao has published over 100 papers on leading academic journals including Operations Research, Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Mathematics of Operations Research, Operations Research Letters, Production and Operations Management, IIE Transactions, Naval Research Logistics, Stochastic Processes and Applications, Advances in Applied Probability, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, etc. Professor Chao is the co-developer of Lekin Scheduling System, and he is also the co-author of two books, "Operations Scheduling with Applications in Manufacturing and Services" (Irwin/McGraw-Hill, 1998), and "Queueing Networks: Customers, Signals, and Product Form Solutions" (John Wiley & Sons, 1999). 

In 2005, Professor Chao received the David F. Baker Distinguished Research Award from Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE). He shared the 1998 Erlang Prize from The Applied Probability Society of INFORMS, and received the Outstanding Overseas Chinese Scientist Award from National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2002, the Outstanding Overseas Scientist Award from Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2004. He received the 2014 Jon and Beverly Holt Award for Excellence in Teaching from the University of Michigan. He is a fellow of both INFORMS and IIE. 

Professor Chao has served on the editorial boards for many international journals. He is currently Area Editor for Operations Research Letters, and Associate Editor for Operations Research, Management Science, Naval Research Logistics, and Journal of Operations Research Society of China, among others. 

Professor Chao holds Ph.D. and M.S. in Operations Research from Columbia University.
